Subtracting using bridging tens, place value and number facts (four days). Children target 100 to solve subtractions such as 103 – 89 (difference) and 103 – 5 (take away). The partitioning of the number to be taken away is discussed. Children use T10 (target the tens) to find differences such as 72 – 38, which are ‘wider’ than those they have found before, and are encouraged just to draft the section of the number line they need. Two-digit subtractions are sorted according to whether children find it easier/quicker to find a difference or take away (using J10, counting back in tens first).
