Addition and subtraction (two days). Written methods are used to add three numbers with a mix of those with one decimal place and those with two decimal places: the importance of aligning digits according to place value is emphasised. Subtracting using bridging tens, place value and number facts (four days). Children target 100 to solve subtractions such as 103 – 89 (difference) and 103 – 5 (take away). The partitioning of the number to be taken away is discussed. Children use T10 (target the tens) to find differences such as 72 – 38, which are ‘wider’ than those they have found before, and are encouraged just to draft the section of the number line they need. In Wiesner’s book Tuesday strange events took place on a Tuesday around 8pm! As detectives, children interview witnesses before filing their report. Children stick their two paintings of toys from the last session on either side of an A4 piece of card. When their work is dry they draw lines and cut out a simple double sided jigsaw.
